Why ecostore
We’re helping protect the earth’s precious oceans by supporting the global marine sector with our safe, high-performing plant and mineral-based cleaning and personal body care formulations. We know that knowledgeable, passionate recreational boaties and professional mariners are acutely aware of the environment that surrounds them and their impact on it. Every fluid used onboard will at some point flow out into the ocean, mostly untreated. Our plant and mineral-based products have been carefully formulated to perform brilliantly, while minimising your vessel’s impact on the marine environment and providing a healthier, safer onboard environment for guests and crew. Our formulations are suitable for greywater tanks and black water systems, conforming to rigorous global standards and exceeding MARPOL requirements.
We’re continually innovating and testing to improve our plant and mineral-based home and personal care products to make sure they’re both highly effective and safer for you. This always starts with the precautionary principle: if there’s ever any doubt about the safety of an ingredient we’ll find a safer one. We use trusted global resources like the Environmental Working Group’s EWG Skin Deep® Cosmetic Database to help us assess the safety of every ingredient, to make sure it meets the highest health, safety and performance standards. We’ll always tell you what’s in (and not in) our products so you can make healthy, informed choices.
We’re incredibly proud to have become a Certified B Corporation® . This certification is recognised globally as the highest standard for social corporate responsibility. B Corps are companies that formally commit to using the positive power of business to solve the world’s social and environmental problems.
We’ve always been led by strong values, to be better for people and the planet – and using our business as a force for good. Becoming a B Corp is a big step on our ongoing journey to make the world a safer place, put people’s health first and give everyone the choice to live free from nasty chemicals.
As a B Corp, we’re independently verified by the B Lab to ensure that the way we do business positively affects workers, customers, suppliers, community members, governance and the environment. This gives us a clear framework for measuring our impacts in all areas and a pathway for continuous improvement.
Single-use plastic chokes the world’s waterways and endangers wildlife that live above, on and under the water. Our refill solutions for cleaning and personal care products let your crew refill all daily use dispensers onboard. This hugely reduces the amount of single-use plastic normally carried and disposed of during a cruise.
Ecostore has been a leader in offering sustainable retail alternatives for more than 20 years. We’re helping consumers reduce their plastic use at our refill stations across NZ, and increasingly onboard as vessels look to cut down on single-use plastic. Contact us to learn more about setting up refills onboard.
We’re honoured to have New Zealand Olympic Gold Medallists, Volvo Around the World sailors and Americas Cup winners Peter Burling and Blair Tuke as ecostore Brand Ambassadors.
Like us, Peter and Blair are committed to protecting and preserving our oceans. Their ocean conservation foundation Live Ocean is supported by ecostore with a percentage of all sales of our ocean-friendly Boat Wash going to help fund their conservation initiatives.
Ecostore actively supports Yacht Club Youth Programmes to educate and encourage future generations to appreciate and protect our ocean environments.
CLEAR OCEAN PACT
The Pact unites the yachting industry behind one common set of goals and provides a platform to share information on viable alternatives to single-use plastic.
ELLEN MACARTHUR FOUNDATION GLOBAL COMMITMENT
We’re committed to eliminating unnecessary plastic, innovating to ensure our plastic can be safely reused, recycled, or composted; and circulating everything we use, to keep it in the economy and out of the environment.
INTERNATIONAL SUPERYACHT SOCIETY
We support the Society’s mission to promote excellence and ensure sustainability in the global yachting industry.
New Zealand Partners
SUSTAINABLE COASTLINES
Sustainable Coastlines helps people look after the places we love, through coastal clean-up and waterway restoration events, education programmes and public awareness campaigns. As a gold partner, we contribute towards operating costs and provide product support.
SEA CLEANERS
Ecostore sponsors this non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving New Zealand’s coastline for the benefit of marine life and the enjoyment of all users. As well as removing rubbish, Sea Cleaners educate people to protect the marine environment.
Our products proudly carry the logo of the world’s largest animal rights organisation, PETA. We’ve signed their statement of assurance verifying that we do not conduct or commission any animal testing on our ingredients, formulations, or finished products and pledge not to do so in the future. Instead, we carry out extensive in-house testing and large-scale consumer testing of our products to make sure our customers love them as much as we do.
In China, where animal testing for some cosmetics products is required, all of our affected body care products are sold online. This means we’re not required to test on animals – these body care products won’t be available in physical stores in mainland China as long as animal testing is required there.
Certification
Our New Zealand-based factory is the only manufacturer in Australasia with ISO 9001, ISO 14001:2015, Toitū enviromark diamond and Toitū net carbonzero certifications – your guarantee that our products are made with the utmost care for our environment. Our Laundry and Dish products are also certified with the Environmental Choice tick.
We also hold a Kosher license for our dishwashing products, ensuring our ingredients don’t contaminate Kosher-certified food and that we don’t use animal or dairy ingredients in these products.
GE/GMO Free
None of our plant-based ingredients come from genetically modified crops such as corn or soy. While we’re against GE field trials, we agree with organisations like Greenpeace that there’s a place for the ethical development of GE in laboratories, for producing medicines like insulin, or useful enzymes. The enzymes used in our auto dish powders, dish tabs and laundry products are a result of genetically engineered micro-organisms.
Performance without compromise
To paraphrase Einstein’s principle, our formulations are ‘as simple as possible, but no simpler.’ Our product development team uses the least number of ingredients at optimal concentrations to create effective formulations that stack up against market leaders. We don’t use bulking agents or fillers, which means you can use less and still get great results.
